Audio: METALLICA's KIRK HAMMETT Talks 'Orion Music + More' Festival

Anne Erickson of Gibson.com recently conducted an interview with METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett about the second annual Orion Music + More, a music and lifestyle festival created by METALLICA and their friends at C3 Presents. The event, which is taking place June 8-9 at Belle Isle in Detroit, will feature performances from METALLICA as well as from the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, RISE AGAINST, DEFTONES and many others, plus, like last year's inaugural edition of Orion, it boasts lifestyle elements that reflect each of the bandmembers' personal interests. Although last year's inaugural edition was held in Atlantic City, New Jersey, METALLICA frontman James Hetfield was asked at a press conference on Thursday about what the band wants to see this weekend that will keep the event in the Motor City. "Well, hopefully we see some smiles," he said. "We're not expecting this thing to break even for a while, really. It's a long term investment, and as a band who's done lots of things over 30 years, this is another adventure. We're trying to help make a stamp on music history. So at the end of the day, it's not about us making money at all."

METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich told Business Week that even though last year's festival sold a total of 24,000 tickets, the band did not make money from the venture. He explained, "I wish we broke even last year. I'd obviously like to get into a situation where it's not costing us, but that will probably be another couple of years away. You've got to be in it for the long haul."

Among the non-musical attractions coming back for the Detroit edition are the Metallica Museum, containing 30 years' worth of band history and memorabilia, James Hetfield's Custom Car & Motorcycle Show, guitarist Kirk Hammett's Crypt of horror movie memorabilia, Lars Ulrich's Hit the Lights Film Tent and bassist Robert Trujillo's Vans Vert Ramp.
